If you’re looking for an engagement session location in Austin that feels classic, romantic, and gives you a TON of variety, the Texas State Capitol is one of my favorites.
Victoria and Fernando chose the Capitol for their engagement photos, and we spent the morning wandering around the grounds, stopping whenever we found a spot that felt good. Between the grand architecture, huge staircases, columns, greenery, walkways, and views of the Capitol itself, you can create an entire gallery here without every photo feeling like it was taken in the same place.
And these two made my job ridiculously easy.
Their session felt more like hanging out and exploring Austin together than standing around having their photos taken. Lots of laughing, walking, talking, and letting them actually be together while I documented it. Exactly how I want engagement photos to feel.
Planning Engagement Photos at the Texas State Capitol
One of the best parts about the Texas State Capitol is that it’s open to the public, and photography is permitted throughout the Capitol, Extension, and grounds unless otherwise noted. The grounds alone cover about 22 acres, so there is plenty of room to explore.
My biggest recommendation? Go early on a weekday.
The Capitol opens for self-guided visitors at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, which makes an early morning session perfect if you want softer light and fewer people wandering through the background.
For a simple engagement session, there isn’t an admission fee to visit the Capitol or explore the grounds. If you’re planning something more elaborate or bringing production equipment, though, it’s worth checking the State Preservation Board’s current photography and filming guidelines beforehand, since organized productions can have additional requirements.
