Julia Ideson Building Engagement Photos | Hamza & Sara

If you want engagement photos in Houston that feel romantic, architectural, and just a little bit old-world, the Julia Ideson Building is hard to beat.

Hamza and Sara chose this downtown Houston landmark for their engagement session, and it fit them SO well. We spent our time exploring the building and all of those little corners that make this location feel completely different from your typical Houston engagement session.

These two were also just genuinely fun to photograph. We moved around, laughed a lot, and let the building be the backdrop rather than making every photo feel overly posed.

Taking Engagement Photos at the Julia Ideson Building

The Julia Ideson Building is located at 550 McKinney Street in Downtown Houston and is part of the Houston Public Library system. The historic building dates back to 1926 and its Spanish Renaissance architecture is a BIG part of why I love photographing here.

Unlike some Houston engagement photo locations, you do need to plan ahead to photograph here professionally.

Houston Public Library currently requires professional photography sessions to be scheduled and paid for in advance. The current photography permit rates are $150 for 1.5 hours or $300 for 3 hours. Sessions are scheduled during the building’s normal operating hours. You’ll need to check in with security when you arrive with your confirmation and payment receipt.

Current public hours are generally:

Monday: 12 PM–5 PM
Tuesday & Wednesday: 10 AM–5 PM
Thursday: 11 AM–6 PM
Friday & Saturday: 10 AM–5 PM

Thursday is one of my favorite days to consider because that later closing time gives us a little more flexibility when planning around the afternoon light.

Always double-check the current hours and photography policies with Houston Public Library when planning your session since they can change.

A Quick Note About Parking

Parking is probably my least favorite part about shooting here because, well… downtown Houston.

Give yourself extra time and don’t plan on pulling up five minutes before your session starts.

I recommend using a nearby paid parking garage rather than trying to hunt for street parking. It usually costs around $18, depending on the day and length of your stay, but I personally prefer having my car in a garage while we’re walking around downtown with camera gear. Just make sure you check the posted rate when you arrive since downtown parking prices can vary.

Is Julia Ideson Good for Engagement Photos?

Absolutely.

If you love photos that feel a little moodier, romantic, classic, and different from the usual field-or-park engagement session, this is one of my favorite engagement photo locations in Houston.

And Hamza and Sara were the perfect couple for it.

Their session was relaxed, ridiculously easy to photograph, and such a fun afternoon wandering around one of Houston’s prettiest historic buildings. Sessions like this are exactly why I love engagement photos. You get dressed up, hang out with your person, explore somewhere beautiful, and somewhere in between all of that, we make some really good photos.
