Letting Go of the “Must-Have” Shot List: Why Trusting Your Photographer Leads to More Real, Emotional Photos

We’ve all seen them—those long, well-intentioned Pinterest lists titled “Wedding Photos You Must Have.” The first kiss, the ring exchange, the first dance. And yes, those moments matter. But here’s the thing:

Your wedding is not a checklist.

It’s a lived experience, full of fleeting, imperfect, deeply personal moments that can’t be pre-scripted. As a photographer, my job goes far beyond ticking boxes—it’s about watching, listening, and tuning into what’s real. That’s where the magic is.

The Problem with Overplanning Your Photos

When couples hand me a detailed shot list that’s 30 lines long, here’s what can happen:

We lose spontaneity. – There’s less room to follow the light, chase laughter, or capture the tears you didn’t expect.

It puts you in “performance” mode. – You start thinking about what’s next instead of being *present.*

It distracts me from what really matters.- Like the way your partner looks at you when you’re not watching. Or the squeeze of your dad’s hand right before the aisle.

Photography is about presence—not pressure.

The Photos You’ll Cherish Most Aren’t on a List

Some of my favorite images I’ve ever delivered were never planned. They weren’t even noticed in the moment. A quiet breath before walking down the aisle. Your best friend’s tearful toast. The wind catching your veil. A burst of laughter during the vows. Dancing away as you make your way to the reception.

These moments happen in between the planned ones. And they’re often the most meaningful.

So What Should You Focus On Instead?

Here’s what I suggest couples do instead of obsessing over a long “must-have” list:

Communicate what matters to you emotionally.- Are you really close with your grandmother? Do you value the party energy or the quiet, intimate portraits? Let me know the feelings you want to remember.

Trust me to watch.- I’ve photographed 100+ weddings, and I know how to anticipate moments while keeping things effortless for you.

Be yourselves.- Laugh, cry, dance, hold each other. The more you forget the camera, the more your gallery will reflect the truth of your day.

Your Day Is a Story, Not a Script

At K-Ruiz Photography, I shoot with my style but it’s your story I’m telling. One that unfolds in real time. I promise to capture the beauty, the chaos, the calm, the messy joy. All of it. But only if we allow space for it.

So let go of the list. Trust your love. I’ve got you.
